Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? A New York Pop Quiz
Prof. Dr. Stefan Brandt
“New York is a different country,” the entrepreneur Henry Ford once quipped. Throughout its history, the ‘Big Apple’ has been characterized as both an ‘independent space’ in its own right and the epitome of the ‘American Dream.’ New York City has also come to symbolize both ‘Americanness’ (being termed an ‘all-American city’) and globalization (‘The World’s Business Capital’). The lecture, designed as an interactive pop quiz, will investigate some of these paradoxes and provide a general overview of the lively cultural history of the most populous and most symbolic of American cities, from the colonial beginnings to the post-9/11 era.
